  4. lowers the pressure
  5. of the refrigerant
  6. and decides how
  7. much to send to the
  8. evaporator.  The
  9. expansion valve
  10. opens when the
  11. compressor starts
  12. and forces the high
  13. pressure liquid
  14. through a screen to
  15. strain it.  Once
  16. inside the
  17. expansion valve,
  18. the refrigerant is
  19. brought to the
  20. correct pressure
  21. keeping the balance
  22. correct between the
  23. heat load and the
  24. efficiency of the
  25. evaporator.  When
  26. more refrigerant is
  27. called for, the
  28. expansion valve
  29. opens to allow more
  30. refrigerant into
  31. the evaporator's
  32. coils.
